Holden Celebrates National School Lunch Week with Level-Up Theme
LIVINGSTON, La. – The students, teachers and staff at Holden School held a special celebration on Oct. 10 to celebrate National School Lunch Week. They wore their favorite video game shirts in recognition of the theme, “Level-Up with a Healthy Lunch.”
Also, to celebrate the day, the nutrition staff workers served everyone’s favorite – gumbo.
“Our nutrition staff has worked very hard decorating for the celebration and planning activities for the entire week,” Holden Principal Kris Rountree said. “These ladies work very hard every day to ensure all our students receive a healthy, well-balanced meal. Their attention to proper nutrition is an important component of our academic success.”
President John F. Kennedy created National School Lunch Week (NSLW) in 1962 to observe and promote the importance of a healthy school lunch in a child’s life and the impact it has both in and out of the classroom.
Supervisor of Child Nutrition Sommer Purvis said each school in the district has been challenged to submit a portfolio of NSLW activities for a chance to be recognized nationally. At the same time, every school has been asked to complete a choice board during the school year for a local winner to be declared in May 2024. The choice board is a department challenge referred to as MORE (Moments of Recognition Every Day).
As part of that local competition, schools were encouraged to invite community members to share a healthy meal with students and staff. Several elected and community leaders visited Holden School on Oct. 10.
