Learning Center Tips
Tips on Managing Learning Centers to help you assure that all children will spend time on the computer.

We use the computer as 1 center during center time. I either have a math practice game or the instant readers CD that came from Reading Initiative last year. The students enjoy writing their own stories to go with their pictures.

I have a schedule-2 students go at a time- Every student goes to the computer once a week during enrichment and spelling

Students are given an opportunity to work at least 30 min a week on the computer.
A schedule is posted on the wall and stays the same every week so that students know their time.
I use handwriting and enrichment time for most students but some stronger students work after math instruction or language instruction.

I rotate my computer usage with centers. My students are split into groups. One day group "A" uses the computers to complete the assigned activity.
Another way I rotate my computers is to post a list of student names  in ABC order, then we use a marker that moves from student to student. One student starts the usage by setting a timer for 20 minutes.  When his/her time is up, he taps the next person on the list. If that person is at a stopping point, he/she goes to the computer and sets the timer.  If he/she is not ready, the first child goes to the next person on the list and so on.

Let the row for the day (Monday-Friday) use the computer during a certain time each day. They usually work together in 2's or 3's. This is mostly during free time.
