How to Save a File

To save a file click on File from the menu bar and Save As when you save it for the first time.  This will allow you to give it a name and to designate a place (folder or drive) to save it. To save changes from then on just click on save.

 The "Save As" dialog box:

1.Click on the drop down arrow to choose which drive to save in.
This is a network drive housed on a server at your school.
This is the dvd/cd drive on your computer
The is the hard drive on your computer
2. Double click on the folder you choose to save your file in.
3. Type in a name.
4. Click "Save".

Don't forget where you saved it and what you named it.

When naming your files use consistency and organization.  Before Windows'95, DOS allowed only 8 characters, a period, and the three character extension.( *This naming extension is still followed on the server that houses our school web pages, a good rule of thumb is to use all lower case and only 8 characters). The extension is the "file type" and is identified by three characters at the end of the name that are seperated from the name with a period. This extension is automatically added to the end of your file by the program you are using. (In most programs you may change the file type if needed). For example:
.wpd    WordPerfect document
.doc     Microsoft Word document
.shw    WordPerfect Presentations slideshow
.htm     HTML document
