Getting Technology Up and Running for the 
Beginning of the school year

Every Teacher- on each computer in their classroom (not in labs*) and at home should:
  • Set up your computer for “Automatic Updates”
  • Scan for Viruses using “eTrust”
  • Delete “Temporary Internet Files”
  • Use a “Pop Up Blocker”
  • Never log on under your name and allow students to use the computer. Use the student log in for your school.

Student Log In
  • Middle and High
    • Username = Full last name, first two letters of first name, last 2 digits of SS #
    • Password = First three letters of first name, last 4 digits of SS #
    • All lower case no spaces
  • Elementary
    • Generic log in by school
      • 4 letter school abbreviation plus the letters “stu” with no password.

Automatic Updates
  • With Automatic Updates, Windows routinely checks for updates that can help protect your computer against the latest viruses and other security threats.
  • If your computer is turned off during a scheduled update, updates are installed the next time you start your computer.

Start> Control Panel > Automatic Updates

eTrust –Antivirus Software
  • Automatically Scan your computer
  • Automatically update Signature files to find new viruses

Realtime Monitor scans automatically
  • After you install eTrust the ETrustRealtime Monitor will be scanning for viruses. The Realtime Monitor icon will display in the system tray when the software is running, as shown below:





  • When a virus is found you will receive a pop-up dialogue box which will provide the location of the file and what was done with the virus.

To scan manually:
Start> Programs> Computer Associates> ETrust

Click the Green Arrow to scan items you have checked

Make sure your virus program is up to date by…

To check that your computer is being scanned and that Files are being updated…

Delete Temporary Internet Files
  • Open Internet Explorer
  • Click Tools > Internet Options

To turn Pop-up Blocker on or off
  • In Internet Explorer, click the Tools button, and then click Pop-up Blocker.
  • Or click the icon on the tool bar.
    • You can always allow pop ups from a site or
    • Allow individual pop up windows

If you are not able to access the internet …
  • Check to see if you are logged in correctly, re-log in, make sure “Workstation only” is not checked.
  • Make sure you network cable is plugged in to your computer and to the internet drop in your classroom.
  • Go to Internet Explorer, click Tools> Options> Connections>Lan Settings…
  • Make sure no boxes are checked.
  • If your computer does not allow this, let the Technology Coordinator at your school know.
