TECHNOLOGY REPORT
Livingston Parish School System has made great strides in its effort to initiate, support and build upon the technology base. The system's mission is to make certain all students and school staffs are engaged in meaningful activities in a technology-rich environment that will enhance learning, communication and productivity. To this end, we are well on our way.
The Office of Technology is made up of three departments - the Management Information Systems (MIS) Department, the Wide Area Network (WAN) Department and the Technology Training Department.
MIS Department
The MIS Department is responsible for managing the data required by our local schools, state and the federal government. Computer applications supported are: Payroll, Accounting, Student Information Systems, Purchasing, Property Control, and Personnel.
WAN Department
The WAN Department is responsible for maintaining the WAN and Local Area Networks (LANs) at all of the 41 sites. The WAN is wireless with 23MB of internet to schools and 15 MB to the Internet. All faculty and staff have user account and all high school students have user accounts. Email is managed with GroupWise. Email accounts are issued to all teachers and administrators in the school system. There are over 90 servers, running various services, connected to the WAN supporting over 6,000 PCs throughout the school district. All classrooms, with the exception of a few temporary buildings, are wired for the Internet. CISCO routers and switches are connected with fiber and category 5 cabling to provide a GB backbone and 100 MB switched Ethernet to the computer.
Livingston Parish participates in the Federal erate program and receives a 65% discount on telecommunications services. Training Department The training department is responsible for administering integration of technology training with curriculum training to better equip our teachers with the necessary skills to address the needs of our students. We consider the needs of our students to be not only curriculum related but also technology related. We believe that students need to know how to use the technology tools of today's world in order to be successful responsible community members in the future. The Training department consists of two full time trainers who write and administer grants and provide training. There are two state of the art training labs at the central office that have 20 workstations a presentation station and a digital projector mounted on the ceiling, printers, a variety of digital cameras, and laptops. The training labs are available for use by any one who wishes to use them and are regularly used by all. The digital cameras and laptops are available for use as well. We offer a variety of trainings to our staff, ranging from semester long Graduate level classes to short application specific training. Training occurs at night, during the summer and during the school day as necessary. Participants receive equipment and or software for attending the classes. Online Training is offered through Blackboard.
