The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools has approved nine Livingston Parish high schools. This nationally recognized program mandates strict standards and procedures that were approved regularly through monitoring by an independent peer review team of trained school personnel.
In addition, all Livingston Parish high schools were approved by the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education using a selected curriculum with standards meeting graduation expectations. More than 1,087 seniors graduated this school year.
All Livingston Parish high schools offer college preparatory classes that meet or exceed the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education requirements for graduation. In addition to approved college preparatory classes, our high schools also provide many career technical courses designed to prepare students for the workforce.
Many of our high schools presented courses that were designed by their own teachers and approved by the State Department of Education. These locally-initiated electives enhanced the parish educational program and offered a greater variety of instruction in both vocational and college preparatory areas. Also, many high school students were enrolled in college courses and career/technical courses that will articulate to their post secondary degree plan. Many were able to attend these courses at little or no cost to students.
Eight hundred and sixteen students took the ACT College entrance examination last school session. Their average overall composite score was 20.3. The parish composite scores were: English – 20.2; Reading - 20.4; Math – 19.8; Science Reasoning – 20.1.
Livingston Parish also had many students for the state’s Tuition Opportunity Program for Students (TOPS) scholarship program. Last year, there were five types of TOPS funding programs available. Each had its own criteria established by the state and included consideration of core subjects, grade point average, and a minimum score on the ACT test. By meeting these criteria, students were approved for scholarship assistance. Students entering high school were given information about TOPS criteria in an effort to encourage more participation in the program.
High school students are now encouraged to pursue an academic and/or career technical diploma endorsement. Both endorsements indicate that students have excelled above and beyond the requirements for a standard diploma in these areas. |
