LIBRARY REPORT
The School Library program in Livingston Parish is completely computerized and is second to none in the state. All of our libraries have computer labs and most middle and elementary libraries offer accelerated reading programs designed to encourage students to read. Our librarians are also trained well and serve their schools well as Media Specialists and Tech Specialists.
Added to the list of new Library facilities this year is Denham Springs Elementary. This is a nice elementary library and when the setup has been completed, will have much to offer its teachers and students. The new library will have to re-barcode some books and add others. The Library will also have a computer lab and will offer an accelerated reading program to its students.
Our schools continue to provide a multitude of programs for our students and teachers. Some of the programs include: World Book-on-line, Gale Database-on-line and Periodical programs-on-line just to name a few. All Librarians have also upgraded and trained for the new Destiny program.
Students access the card catalog via the computer. We do not have card catalogs in libraries today. All libraries have Internet access which allows both students and teachers to take advantage of resources necessary for teaching and learning activities. With the updating of the Follett Library Computer Software, which is used to run our programs, we have truly advanced to the technological age, which allows us to make good use of available resources now.
Our libraries receive funding from various sources. Allocated from the state is $2 per student for library books and reference materials. Federal funding from the Chapter V programs is used to purchase Library books and update software and reference materials. Local funds in the amount of $2500 are given to each school for the purpose of acquiring needed materials, Tech supplies, and other operational supplies. All funds are monitored. So one can see why we are excited about the Livingston Parish Library Program. Our Library program is meeting the needs of the students we serve. Our students enjoy reading as evidenced by an increase in the checking out of library books. Our media specialists also do a great job of always looking for resources that will enhance the instructional program. We will continue to find ways to improve our program.
