LEAP REMEDIATION
Louisiana Educational Assessment Program (LEAP) will again be in place at each of our parish schools that test students using the state test in grades 4, 8 and the high school exit exam (GEE) in grades 10 and 11. According to state accountability procedures, students must pass the LEAP Test in grades 4 and 8 to be eligible for promotion and the math, language arts, and social studies or science sections of the GEE/GEE21 to graduate from high school. Our school system will again offer remediation assistance to all students who did not pass one or more sections of the test. Remediation efforts will be budgeted using MFP funds, EEF Funds (funds derived from the Tobacco Settlement), and 8 (G) grants. These funds will be distributed to tutors, aides, and certified teachers working after hours and during the summer to assist students to the level of basic before being re-tested in the area(s) needed to pass before being promoted. The amount each school receives will be based on the number of students needing remediation. At the conclusion of remediation, students will be retested for mastery.
Remediation efforts are provided through many forms. In the elementary schools and most of the middle/junior high schools, computer labs using lab managers will work on a variety of areas in the math and language arts. Through participation in this program, understanding of the curriculum content should. increase. Elementary and junior high students will also have the opportunity to participate in a variety of tutoring efforts designed to improve their grades and test scores. At the high school level, teachers are contracted in their area of certification to assist all students who are willing to attend sessions geared for their improvement. High school students must pass the GEE in order to graduate and opportunities are available for these students to receive remediation and tutoring after school hours.
The state’s accountability program directly impacts student achievement. Mastery of certain areas must be attained prior to promotion. Parental involvement and support of these programs is vital to the success of our students. |
