ENERGY REPORT
The Livingston Parish Public School System has continued with its success in the energy program established by the Board. I am continually amazed at the cooperation and hard work by each person that has resulted in saving tax dollars while conserving and protecting environmental resources.
By working together to save energy we have exceeded the energy savings projections established by consultants for the just-completed year by over $200,000. The district was projected to reach a savings of $425,000 during the fifth year of its program when, in fact, we have realized a savings for this period of $629,136. Livingston Parish Public Schools has saved a total of $2,595,458 since the inception of the energy program while the consultants initial savings projections for this period was $1,085,458.
Livingston Parish Public School personnel at every level have made an extra effort to control energy usage in every area and it is only because of this dedication that the energy program has been so successful. However, we can not cease our efforts or develop a laissez-faire attitude during the days ahead. The cost per unit on electricity has caused the System to realize an increase cost per day exceeding 60 percent and natural gas prices has caused a heating increase cost per day exceeding 75 percent per day. We can not control the cost per unit nor can we search the open market to choose our provider. There is only one thing we can do…decrease consumption.
We have one an excellent job thus far but the 2005/2006 year is going to be a challenging one. We must continue to work together and remember not to overlook even the smallest thing that can save energy. Thermostats will have to be lowered during the heating season and raised during the cooling season; lights should be turned off when leaving class rooms and electrical consuming devices should be turned off at the end of each day and during holidays. During extreme temperatures, doors to hallways, cafeterias and class rooms should remain closed. Remember, you make the savings possible. |
