CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION Career and Technical Education in Livingston Parish is continuing to expand its programs to meet the needs of the workforce. The Certified Nursing Assistant Program last school year was a great success for all involved. This school year we are offering CNA courses at Live Oak, Albany High, Walker and Denham Springs High schools. A First Responder course will also be offered at these three sites.
The Career and Technical Department continues to lead the way in the implementation of Act 1124 (Career Options Law) that was mandated by the Legislature. At this time Livingston Parish is in full compliance with all mandates of the Legislation. We have developed career clusters and career majors for all high school students. All students entering the 9th grade must have selected a career major and have a Five-year education plan on file.
For the 2004-2005 school year, Livingston Parish will be receiving approximately $182,000.00 in Federal funds for operating the Career and Technical Programs. These funds must be spent based on the Local Application Plan approved by the State Department of Education. Parish general fund dollars will continue to be used to fund Career and Technical student allotment. For the 2004-2005 school year the Agriscience teachers will get $50.00 per student and Technology Education Teachers will get $12.00 per student while the other Career and Technical teachers will be getting $9.00 per student. These funds must be used to purchase supplies and materials that will benefit the students.
Livingston Parish will continue to be a member of the Baton Rouge Tech Prep Consortium. This is a partnership that was formed and funded by the State. During the 2004-2005 school year Livingston Parish will receive approximately $16,000.00 in funding. These funds used to pay expenses for many of our teachers and administrators to attend the ACTE Conference, as well as attending many local and state staff development activities. Selected students this summer will be in an internship for the "AHEC" Program, allowing them to learn more about the medical field.
Career and Technical Education on the Secondary level consist of: courses in Agriscience, Business, Marketing, Family and Consumer Science, Technology Education, Certified Nursing, First Responder, A+ Computer Repair, and NET+. The many courses that make up the curriculum for each area consist of education and training conducted so as to prepare students for enrollment in technical education programs, college programs, or to develop skills and positive attitudes so that students can enter the world of work.
