TEXTBOOK REPORT

The Textbook Department continues to be a fast growing division. The Department has experienced many changes, including the new Destiny programs which have benefited both the school textbook departments and the school libraries.

Implementation was completed during the first month of school. All students received basal textbooks in the area of mathematics.  New math textbook and other ancillary materials were issued to all schools in the district. Middle school students were also provided with individual textbooks while their teachers were provided with classroom sets.

Each year, every parish in accordance with State Department of Education Policy must adopt new textbooks. The adopted textbooks are added to the state textbook catalog and are available for purchase by local school districts for seven years at state contract price without a change during that period.

The Mathematics Adoption was held this year.  Committees were chosen for Grades K-5, 6-8, and 9-12 textbook for math. They worked hard analyzing and evaluating new state textbooks.  Not only did these committees look at basal textbooks but also ancillary materials such as workbooks, kits, and technology software. Each committee member received samples of all textbooks approved by the State, as well as attended the State Textbook Caravan that was held at Southeastern Louisiana University.  After several months of deliberations and consultations with teachers and administrators within their respective schools, each committee voted to adopt a new text for each subject area. These selections are good for seven years. All of this means that Livingston Parish will be using the same basal textbook for all schools for each subject matter area.

Implementation of the new math textbooks took place this school year. The major goal of the Textbook Department is to provide a basal textbook for each student. This goal has been met again this year and will continuously be met because of the additional funding that is received from the local board. Each year, the demand of meeting the basic need of providing a basal textbook for our students seem to become a challenge due to cost and increased enrollment. However, in Livingston Parish we continue to meet this challenge.

Bar-coding of the textbook inventory continued for the fourth year. All textbooks are barcoded. Teaching materials along with kits and calculators in some instances are also Barcoded. Destiny (the new Textbooks Inventory Program) has provided our schools with a good method of tracking our teaching materials. Destiny is a very popular program because it, in most cases, frees the teacher from having to issue and keep up with student texts. With the addition of the Destiny District program, we have the capability to view inventory of all schools from a master computer and shift books where necessary to provide for needs without having to buy additional texts. We have saved over $300,000 in the purchase of new books since we placed our inventory on computer.

Livingston Parish is a leader of all systems throughout the state in the selection, procuring and distribution of textbooks. We are far beyond most systems because we have all our books on computer. We have Destiny which enables us to manage the entire district without physically checking various schools. We have continued to save money with good sound procedures.

Finally, the ultimate goal of providing a basal text to each student has been met year after year with each new adoption that is implemented.
