MEETINGS
The LPRTA meets monthly during the school year -
September through May. We normally meet at the Livingston Parish School
Board Office the second Monday of each month at 10:00 a.m.
Our January meeting each year is a memorial
service recognizing retirees who died during the previous year. A book is
donated to the Livingston Parish Library in memory of deceased active members.
We elect officers in March and install them in April (we also have a covered
dish luncheon at this meeting.) In December we have a Christmas luncheon
and program at a restaurant in the area. Starting last November (1999) we
began recognizing the various towns and communities in the Parish. The
presenter tells of the early history of the town and its growth up to the
present. We began with Denham Springs in November; in January we continued
with Livingston; and in February we recognized Albany and the Hungarian
Settlement.
We took off in March to go to Westside Junior
High in Walker for a video prepared by Microsoft Corporation for Senior Adults
and then have "hands on" time in the computer lab to learn about purchasing
computers and software, using Internet, e-mail, and other applications.
The class portion was lead by Stephen Loy, Coordinator of Public Relations for
LRTA, and Jenny Causey, Technology Coordinator for the School Board. This
program was so well received that we hope to have additional meetings at
Westside to broaden our knowledge and understanding of computers, Internet, and
e-mail.
All retirees are encouraged to join the
Livingston Parish Retired Teachers Association and the Louisiana Retired
Teachers Association and to participate in meetings and activities of the
organizations.
