Albany High School Wins $100,000 Grant

Albany High School recently received a $100,000 grant from the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education to improve the school’s graduation rate and increase the number of students who pursue post-secondary education options.

The school plans to use the money to add a new and innovative course for all incoming freshman called “Education for Careers/Strategies for Success,” expand after-school tutoring to include all core subjects, implement an in-school suspension     program, implement a school messenger program to increase parental contact, and provide more meaningful professional development activities for teachers.

The 8G grant was competitively awarded to school applicants throughout the state.  Albany High School was the only school in the parish to win an 8G grant this year, and one of only a few to receive full funding for its request.

Principal Jill Prokop noted this grant application was the school’s largest grant endeavor to date.

“We are excited about being awarded this grant.  We know that by achieving the goals of our grant project, our students will improve their readiness and participation in post-secondary education, and they will increase their readiness for a productive career,” Prokop said.
