Harcourt Reading Guidelines for Livingston Parish Public Schools (Revised 2009)

The Facts…

  • Storytown  is a research-based developmental reading program.

  • It is an organized, direct approach to teaching reading and is logically sequenced.

  • It emphasizes explicit, systematic instruction in the five components of reading--- phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension.

  • Storytown is aligned with the Louisiana GLE’s.  We are requiring you to follow the text as it is outlined so that there will be no gaps when building on the reading skills.

According to Bulletin 741: Instructional minutes per day for Reading, English and Spelling:

  • We are requiring that you use the Harcourt series for your Spelling and Phonics lessons.  These go hand-in-hand with the reading skills and will reinforce vocabulary and the skills on which we are building. Additional spelling words may be added to the list as challenge words, if you wish.

  • Novels/Chapter Books may accompany your reading lessons no more than three times a year.  Suggested times:  Christmas, after testing, and the end of the year.

  • You may use the Language and Writing that accompanies this series or continue using the language lessons you have at the present time.  You may want to do a combination of both the text and the comprehensive curriculum to enhance your lessons.

  • We encourage you to continue DOL.
